How To Hurdle

Did you know that there are a number of techniques you can use to hurdle ?

Neither did I !

Since starting this journey to the Olympics I have learned more about hurdling than I had fathomed !

Something you want to know about hurdling ?

I guarantee I know it now !

How To Hurdle

So there are 3 main forms of hurdling that I discuss in this video .

American Style Hurdling

American Style Hurdling

American Style Hurdling is “box like” . Very square with the hurdle. If you notice in the picture Jason Richardson is parallel to the hurdle. His hips and shoulders are both aligned with the hurdle.

American Style Hurdling is a very aggressive style of hurdling. Requiring more strength to execute properly .

European Style Hurdling

Or “Side Ways Hurdling “. Take a look at Daniel Kisses hip and shoulder positions. One shoulder is slightly cocked more forward than the other, and the trail hip is back further than other.

European Style Hurdling is very “dainty” and more a ease. A go with the flow type of hurdling. It is much easier and less aggressive than the American Style Hurdling.

Blends

As you can imagine, blend hurdling is a combination of both European Style Hurdling and American Style Hurdling. A few hurdlers who are able to execute both will do a combination of the two, as a part of race strategy.

Can you spot the difference in the Hurdlers Now ?

  11. Correct me If I am wrong. American hurdles emphasize on brute strength while European style is more of the finesse type. Also, to your experience, which style is more favorable when we deal with steeplechase event. BTW good luck on your dream to take part in the 2016 Olympics.

    • The style is dependent on your body type. Stepple is a little different considering its a longer race… european might be more favorable being that the style uses less energy. but again if your are not built for european style hurdling then it will be difficult for you to do .. and Thank you !
